The Challenge (Sector: Public transport network): The reduction of injuries and fatalities during regular on-the-track engineering works
The underlying business issue: A loss in credibility due to a high number of fatalities (resulting in a growing negative reputation re management indifference)
The Project: Better engagement and understanding between management and staff and contracted engineering crews. A safety on the track initiative was launched to eradicate incidents that generally occurred during late-night engineering – often a result of mis- or no communications as to when track power would be restored and trains set to move. Tactics were grass roots and involved coaching London Underground management and staff how to engage in effective dialogue with engineers as well as providing safety on the track information and guidelines that were placed in workers lunch-boxes, on canteen walls, in pay-slips etc. |
